ISM Abundances in Sculptor Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

چکیده
Using the CTIO 4-m telescope, we have obtained optical spectra of HII regions in five Sculptor Group dwarf irregular galaxies. We derive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur abundances from the HII region spectra. Oxygen abundances are derived via three different methods (the “direct” method, the empirical method guided by photoionization modeling of McGaugh (1991), and the purely empirical method of Pilyugin (2000)) and are compared. Significant systematic differences are found between the three methods, and we suggest that a recalibration of the empirical abundance scale is required. Until differences between these three methods are better understood, the issue of the degree of uniformity of the ISM abundances in a dwarf galaxy cannot be properly addressed. The N/O ratio for the metal-poor dI ESO 473-G24 of log (N/O) = −1.43 ± 0.03 lies well above the plateau of log (N/O) = −1.60 ± 0.02 found by Izotov & Thuan (1999) for a collection of metal-poor blue compact galaxies. This shows that not all galaxies with 12 + log (O/H) ≤ 7.6 have identical elemental abundance ratios, and this implies that the Izotov & Thuan scenario for low metallicity galaxies is not universal. Search for HI in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
After reviewing the HI content and distribution in extreme dwarf irregular (dIrr) and dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, previous searches for HI in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies will be discussed. I will report on the recent detections of HI probably associated with the Local Group (LG) dSph Sculptor and dIrr/dSph Phoenix, obtained with the ATCA, along with a similar detection in the Centaurus...
متن کاملInterstellar Medium Oxygen Abundances of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies in Centaurus A and Nearby Groups⋆
We present results of optical spectroscopy of 35 H II regions from eight dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group. [O III] λ4363 is detected in ESO272−G025 and ESO324−G024, and direct oxygen abundances of 12+log(O/H) = 7.76 ± 0.09 and 7.94±0.11 are derived, respectively. For the remaining galaxies, abundances are derived using common bright-line methods. To compare the influence of group environ...
متن کاملUsing the Ca II Triplet to Trace Abundance Variations in Individual Red Giant Branch stars in Three Nearby Galaxies
Spectroscopic abundance determinations for stars spanning a Hubble time in age are necessary in order to unambiguously determine the evolutionary histories of galaxies. Using FORS1 in Multi-Object Spectroscopy mode on ANTU (UT1) at the ESO-VLT on Paranal we obtained near infrared spectra from which we measured the equivalent widths of the two strongest Ca II triplet lines to determine metal abu...
متن کاملAn Internal Second Parameter Problem in the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present BV photometry of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy to V = 22. These data give evidence for a bimodality in Sculptor’s metallicity distribution based on a discontinuity in the luminosities of horizontal branch (HB) stars and by the presence of two distinct red giant branch (RGB) bumps. A consistent picture of the evolved stars in Sculptor is given by the presence of (1) a metal-poor populatio...
متن کاملMulti-element Abundance Measurements from Medium-resolution Spectra. I. the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present measurements of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 388 radial velocity member stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), a satellite of the Milky Way. This is the largest sample of individual α element (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) abundance measurements in any single dSph. The measurements are made from Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectra (6400–9000 Å, R ∼ 6500). Based on compari...
